In-Person

Te Kaa In-Person Programme

The Te Kaa In-person programme is our most comprehensive and transformational option. It comprises an online learning portal, 3 full-day sessions at 2-3 week intervals, and a 3-hour online session where participants review progress and set personal and organisational goals to embed their learning and continue their transformational journey. The programme concludes with a graduation at a local marae. This option is well suited to leaders who are responsible for driving change through your organisation and those regularly engaged with Māori.

Each session is based on a theme, intentionally crafted to systematically build your understanding of the Māori world. It is rich in dialogue, using explorative learning methodologies to encourage people to think deeply and challenge their perspectives.

Participants who complete the In-person programme will be presented with a taonga upon graduation. See what is covered in the In-person programme, and the learning outcomes that will be achieved.

Te Kaa Ignite is a self-led online training programme that allows you to learn about and embrace Māori culture at your own pace and convenience.

With Te Kaa Ignite, you can deepen your understanding of te ao Māori, learn how to correctly pronounce Māori words, Mihimihi, Pepeha and how to express reverence and celebration through Karakia and Waiata.

This programme is designed to guide you on a transformative cultural journey, weaving you through the rich tapestry of Te Reo Māori.

All ten modules need to be completed before our first in-person session. Come prepared and ready to engage!

Words like tikanga, mana, tapu, noa, mauri and wairua are commonplace in NZ society but not well understood. These concepts, Māori creation stories and values such as kaitiakitanga and manaakitanga will be explained in a way that will help you identify these concepts in operation and how you can make them your own. We will also explore common etiquette when engaging with Māori from a tikanga perspective.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi / The Treaty of Waitangi is the founding document of Aotearoa/ New Zealand. We will look at the context in which it was created, and understand the differences in interpretation. We will review how Te Tiriti has evolved and discuss how Te Tiriti applies in a multicultural context.

This session will explore Māori today, taking a look at Iwi, their structures and aspirations and the impacts of treaty settlements on the Māori economy. In recognising that many New Zealanders have never been on to a Marae, and don't understand the significance of the pōwhiri process, the last part of this session will explain the different domains of the marae and outline Māori engagement processes, so you are fully equipped to participate in the marae graduation and other events at marae.

A 3-hour online session requiring each participant to talk about their journey on Te Kaa and present a plan and make commitment/s for where to from here. This can be recorded for future reference, on request.

A visit to a local Marae, where things learnt in previous sessions will be put in to practice. Participants will go through a pōwhiri process, and the day will conclude with a moving graduation ceremony. Following completion of the programme, all graduates become Te Kaa Amokura (Alumni).

On-Line

Te Kaa On-Line Programme

Te Kaa Online takes the first four sessions of the Te Kaa In-person programme and breaks them into 6 x 4.5-hour online sessions. This is not a static webinar; it includes facilitation in real time to allow participants to be guided through the learning process and ask questions (and receive responses) as and when they arise.

This option is well suited to people working in the regions who are not able to travel to Auckland to participate in training and those with less responsibility for driving change within an organisation.

Attempting to speak another language is daunting, and there can be a real fear of getting it wrong. We create an interactive learning space to help you learn how to pronounce Māori words with confidence.

In this session we learn a variety of openings and closings for speeches and build your own pepeha(unique Māori way of introducing oneself). You’ll also learn karakia (prayer) and waiata (song).

We will explore the Māori worldview through an analysis of the creation story, and come to understand how this framework impacts Māori decision making. We will also come to understand Māori social structures and how they have changed over time.

How the Te Kaa Elect programme works

This has been designed for people from various organisations, delivered at our premises. This is a good alternative for individuals in business or smaller businesses with just a few staff; or for larger organisations who want to send a small group along – perhaps to ‘test the waters’ before arranging a full In-House programme, or to bring new staff up to speed with the competency of other staff who have already attended Te Kaa.
